Pilot Resume – Whether you’re just starting out in the industry or trying to land that dream job, having a clean, organized and easy-to-read resume is essential.

Your resume is often the first impression a potential employer (or admissions officer or scholarship committee) will have of you, so it’s worth taking the time and effort to make sure that first impression is of someone who is organized, intelligent, and focused on procedural details.

Even if you’ve already created a resume or CV (“curriculum vitae”) outside of aviation, there are some key differences between a pilot’s resume that you should be aware of.

Creative Resumes: Different Format Of A Creative Resume For Landing A Job

Unlike many other industries, a one-page CV is standard in aviation. This will affect many of your choices and may require you to get creative with formatting, margins, fonts and line spacing. Remember that your resume doesn’t have to say everything about you, just the parts that are most important to the employer or organization you’re targeting. The goal is to show enough information to convey your strengths, but not so much that the page is cluttered and difficult to read. It should be visually pleasing and balanced from top to bottom and left to right.

You should use one or two modern, readable fonts (I prefer Avenir Next; other common fonts are Helvetica Neue, Tahoma, Trebuchet MS, and Verdana).

Many industries, especially creative fields, have adopted more modern resume formats that include color, photos, multiple columns, introductory paragraphs, and lists of soft and technical skills or descriptive keywords. However, I would think that most aviation employers value a conservative approach over creativity, and your resume should reflect that.

Your name should be clearly visible and sufficiently separated from the rest of the text. This is a great place to use a slightly different, elegant font for your resume (I used Didot here; Garamond is another great choice). Whether you use your middle name, middle initials, or just your first and last name is a matter of taste and largely depends on how many words your parents gave you, but you should try to match what you put on your application and cover letter. a letter. I would like to put my contact information in the header; some people put it in a footnote.

Many non-aviation fields have gotten rid of the target and do a summary, but it’s still pretty common for us. You should tailor your entire resume to each job and employer/organization you are targeting, but especially this section. Make sure you get the job title right and especially the potential employer’s name! There is no surer way to get to the bottom of the pile at Delta Air Lines than to say you want to work for Delta Airlines.

It can be placed before or after the flight-specific sections. I would argue that if you have a four-year degree or higher and your potential employer is known to value education, this section should come first. If you don’t have a degree or it’s not required for the job you’re applying for, you can list your education after your work experience.

You should include at least the highest education you received, including the name and location of the institution, course of study, date of graduation, and honors and/or GPA (if greater than 3.0). Any finer details depend on the job requirements and how much space you have to fill. For example, if you’re just starting out with only a few FAA certifications, little flying time, and little work history, you might list high school and college. If you completed your flight training program at a non-collegiate flight academy, it would be appropriate to list that here. If you have completed professional development programs outside of aviation (for example, IT certification), list them if you have space or your education department is otherwise lacking. If you have multiple entries, list them in reverse chronological order.

If you have military service, we’ll include this section right after your education or right before your work experience, whichever comes first on your resume. One line indicating military branch and dates of service is sufficient; you will also list specific military positions and units with work experience.”

This and the next two sections are part of your resume. Provide at least the pilot license (with category, class and type ratings) and the medical certificate required for the position you are applying for. In this case, when I refer to World Domination Airlines, I could delete the third and fourth lines if I ran out of space; they don’t necessarily care about my commercial glider or CFII rating. But if you have room, give every certificate and score you get; they paint a complete picture of a complete pilot. If you have space, try to use the words printed on the certificates. Do not include exclusions or medical limitations. Include minor certificates (eg Flintshire County Council Limited Radio Telephone Operators Licence) only if you need to fill the position or if they are required for your target job.

This should be compiled as a table adapted to the requirements of the target job; too many fields and the heart of your resume will be cluttered. Many programs have very detailed flight time tables that will blow your mind (Solo Night Cross-Country); there’s no reason your CV should be this small either. If I were to search for a location, World Domination Airlines only cares about total time, turbines, and turbine PICs (although a hard time might get their attention).

This is where many resumes get bloated. You don’t need to list every job you’ve ever held; programs for this purpose. In this case, I listed “Airline Work Experience” because I’ve had room for three airlines and even an internship a long time ago. Earlier in my career I called it “Flying Work Experience” and that included flying schools and Part 135 uniforms, and before that it was just “work experience” back at my work high school in the forest yard. If you hit the spot, call “Recent Work Experience” and list only your current position and most recent past work.

For each entry, include company name and location, dates of employment and a few descriptive points (for aviation jobs: location, aircraft flown, type of operation). In sales and creative, it’s common to use “power verbs” to brag about all the great work you’ve done. Not necessary here; all flights are assumed to be successful. Proposals should be submitted in reverse chronological order.

I can’t stress this enough: pay absolute microscopic attention to detail and add a few sets of eyeballs to your resume before you submit it to any employer you’re trying to woo. Send not only to your flying friends, but also to your literate friends. Spelling, grammar and punctuation must be perfect, and style and formatting must be consistent. View your resume in a variety of places: not just in a word processor, but also in PDF format and on plain printer paper and good resume paper. The example above has a few minor mistakes that I didn’t notice until I printed it (I left them as easter eggs).

When submitting your resume online (via email or attached to your application), the best format is PDF, as sometimes different versions of word processors render DOC or DOCX files differently. Word, Pages, and many other word processors have the ability to export to PDF.

There are still plenty of situations where an old-fashioned paper resume is needed: job fairs and conventions, interviews, going out on the street cold-calling, or old-school snail mail to a potential employer.

Do yourself a favor and get a really nice resume that looks great. Personally, I like 32 lbs. 100 percent cotton with linen trim. White is a safe color choice; almond or ivory is just as crazy as it would be if CV were flying. Good paper costs $20-$30 per 100 pages; FedEx Office will sell you smaller quantities and can also print copies if you don’t have a high quality printer.
