The first lesson was about different shadow techniques. They learned about hatching, hatching, cross hatching and shading. They had to show all four in four different locations. In doing so, they had to show the highlight, shadow core, drop shadow, and reflected light with each shading method.

In this lesson, students draw still life from perspective. All the objects in life were white. They should have adapted the skills learned from the first lesson and used them to help them in this lesson. Before they draw the whole still life, I focus on a few things in the still life and break them down into basic shapes to help the students draw them better. The students are also taught a drawing formula to guide them. First, draw a still life with all the lights in the room. Then we turned on the spotlights to make the shadows more dramatic. At this point, students can either choose to shade the entire life or select a 6″x6″ section and outline just that section with the rest of the drawing. This was a choice the students could make if they were overwhelmed by hating the whole life. Finally, choose one color pencil to do all the shading and sculpting.

In this lesson I introduce what Surrealism is and show the power of artwork in this movement. I have taught various surrealism techniques to students. The main method we focused on in this project was transformation. Each student had to pick an item from the barrel I had. Then practice in their picture books to draw the object first in reality. Then they had to look carefully at the object and think about what the object could turn into. Then they created a four-page accordion book. The first page is the actual drawn object, the last page is the object that has changed into something new, and the pages in between are where you see the object change. Then they had to add a background to the object, but the background had to go with the changed object. After they were done, we created a stencil of their original shape and a design for the front and back.

The lessons you’ll see below are based on the Inspirational Unit concept. In this unit, students will focus on how music inspires artists.

Students draw the contour of the device based on observation and create a balanced structure based on the line. Students pass the pointer and decorate the background to enhance the music.

In this lesson, students will study Cubist pieces by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and then create an abstract still life painting that includes musical instruments and other objects.

The lesson you see below is based on the concept of Unity Movement. How can human activity be interpreted in works of art? What ideas can be conveyed through human body movements?

In this lesson I introduced images and movements, especially dance movements. I worked wonders on all the dance styles. The students then created pictures in their books of different dance moves. From these they made monoprints and then turned the monoprints into pages and made a Leporello accordion style book.
