A few years ago I started using serial box book reports as a reading project. My students loved making them, I noticed a huge difference in their engagement with the book report process, and they were so excited to share their final projects. We even left products on display in the classroom!

I suggest that you help the parents cover all the cereal boxes with white bulletin board paper before presenting the project. It saves a lot of work!
Cereal Box Writing Project Examples
Before we started the project, I gave each student a graded assessment so they knew what was expected. We went through the rubric together.
Then I explained that the cereal names corresponded to the novel they had chosen to read. Both of these projects were for books
My students loved the freedom to choose their own novel (pre-approved) and to be creative in matching the theme of their cereal box book report with the book!
While creating their reports, students wrote book summaries on a side panel of a cereal box. They identified and described the setting and main characters on the other side panel.

On the back of the serial box book report, students created a fun game or activity related to the book. Some did a word search, while others designed tables, word scrambles or puzzles.
The title, author name, and book ratings were added to the top of the serial box book reports.

The Watsons Go To Birmingham Cereal Box Project
The Serial Box Book Report is an unconventional book report. Students will read a fully realistic fiction chapter book of their choice. After reading the book, students will share key information from the book using a cereal box. (Yes- a box of real cereal) Students should think of a type of cereal (and its name) based on their book. For example, if I’m reading The Tale of Desperaux, I might call my serial Desper-os. Cereal can have oat-shaped ears (because Desperaux has big ears), and I can have marshmallows in the form of spools of yarn, books, and flags (because these nouns play prominent roles in the book).
Then I have to design a box that shows the name of my cereal and what the cereal is. Spend time looking at traditional cereal designs for inspiration. What catches your eye? Colorful text? Pictures of the flakes themselves? Support a character? Students must demonstrate their neatness, creativity and understanding of the book.
Next, students should use the templates provided to share more information about the book. Students will share a summary (including the ending – this is not a wedding book), information about the main character and knowledge of the summary. These papers should be attached to the sides of the box.
On the back of the box, students should design an activity for the back of the box. It can be a game, word search or a puzzle. Use your imagination! It should be related to the book, most importantly.
How To Write A Cereal Box Biography
They will then create a commercial (book talk) about their book. Market it and try to get other students interested in reading your book like a TV commercial gets us interested in buying a product.

Besides having time to read a book in class, students will not have time in class to work on their cereal box.
