How To List References On A Resume (with Examples)

“You don’t need to say anything about references on your resume. You should share information when asked,” says Leto Papadopoulos, career coach at Moose. Don’t waste your resume. (Wouldn’t you write “Interviews available upon request”?

“Employers usually check your resume before they offer it,” says Papadopoulos. Therefore, it is not necessary to provide them when applying for a job for the first time. But it’s a good idea to be prepared to go before you interview them.

If a company wants to hire you while waiting for a reference check, the last thing you want is to ask people for references or collect their contact information. Instead, you should “prepare your links and update them as you search,” says Papadopoulos.

Most companies will ask a candidate for two or three references, so it’s best to prepare at least three. Some prospective employers may require a specific mix of reference types, but in general, you’ll want to list past bosses (or current bosses if they know and support your job search) and past or current colleagues. if you’re early in your career and don’t have previous managers, you can list the professors you worked closely with. If you lead a team, you may be asked for a reference from a previous report. For some client-facing roles, such as account management, companies want to hear from a former client or client, so read up on the norms for your industry.

Once you know who your references will be, you want to make it easier to recommend them to employers when they ask. So, you should compile the necessary information into a reference sheet, one convenient and well-formatted document that can speed up the hiring process in the final stages.

When the time comes, you can attach the link sheet to an email as a Word document or PDF file, or you can copy and paste the information into an email.

You do not need to include your home or work address. companies won’t send them anything. If a reference expresses a strong preference for a particular method of contact, it’s a good idea to put “(preferred contact)” next to this line in your reference list.
