A capo is a device that helps a musician play in a different key without changing chords.

When a capo is engaged, it raises or lowers the pitch of the instrument to fit the correct key. Capos are also used to help singers match their voice to the key of the song. Additionally, capos can be used to help others reproduce the timbre of another instrument (e.g. ukulele).

Capo At This Fret For This Key

The capo is an essential tool for all guitarists because it can bring versatility to a piece of music, is easy to use, and is compact.

As a guitar player, it is important that you know how to use a capo because gaining this knowledge will help improve your guitar playing. Follow these simple steps to get the most out of your capo.

If you are learning to use a guitar capo for the first time, and depending on the type of capo you are using, make sure you are not tightening the capo too much because it puts too much pressure on the frets.

This can cause the guitar to stop playing. Before adding a capo to the guitar, it is also recommended that you first play the guitar to reduce idiosyncrasies that can result from the guitar not sounding right at all.

All capos serve the same purpose, but each type of capo uses a different mechanical function and each can affect your guitar playing in different ways.

There are many different types of capos available. Below I have described 8 different types with a brief description of each.

This revolutionary capo design has grown in popularity with guitarists worldwide due to its slim design, ease of use and reliability.

All you need to do is press the lever on the back of the G7th capo to open it, place it on the slot you want, then press both ends of the capo together. The capo holds itself without you having to twist or tighten anything in place.

Roller capos are made of rollers where one is placed on the neck and the other on the side of the guitar string. This capo is easy to adjust and allows you to quickly change the keys with just your finger.

A roller capo is essential if you are playing a song with fast key changes. Just take the song “Your Smiling Face” by James Taylor.

If you watch the video you can clearly see that he changes the position of his capo even if he has a roller capo doing this would be easier.

As the name suggests, the capo section allows you to strum the exact strings on the guitar without messing up the chords you choose.

This is great for getting some tuning without deviating from standard tuning if you’re not using a capo.

This type of capo has a rubber covered bar that holds down the guitar strings and another bar that presses against the back of the guitar to keep the capo in place. The second bar is usually shaped to fit the shape of the guitar’s neck.

It is still spring loaded and adjustable to ensure that the fret presses all the strings without creating any unwanted buzz.

These types of capos are easy to use and the fact that you can really play them is a traditional capo that doesn’t have enough dials.

This type of capo is one of the most common types of capo for beginner guitarists. They are easy to use, quick to change fret placement, and inexpensive.

Trigger capos are like the spring-loaded capos I mentioned above except you can’t adjust them properly. So, if your guitar strings start playing after installing a capo, you need to do some tuning on the guitar or get another capo.

The Shubb model is unique because it has a lever that uses a locking mechanism that you can adjust to keep the device in place and make sure it doesn’t fall or slip.

What I like about these types of kapos is that you can “set and forget”. You don’t have to adjust the pressure knob in it. Bottom line, they’re more complicated if you’re looking to quickly change keys in the middle of a song.

The toggle capo is probably one of the simplest capos. A loop is made of a rope that is attached to a rope and covered with a rubber material. The rubber covered string sits on the string and the string is used to tighten the grip on the guitar neck.

A screw-on capo is like a C-clamp. You can adjust its grip on the guitar with a screw.

Place the capo on the desired fret and start tightening the screws. Once you can play all the strings clearly, your capo will be set correctly.

The downside is that you have to tighten and loosen the capo all the time. There is no way to “remember” settings you’ve used before.

Now that you know how to use a capo, and “What is a capo?” You can answer this question. How do you decide if you want to buy a capo? Before you go out and buy a capo, it is wise to not only consider your budget but also to understand that there are different types of capo and some are useful in different ways for certain purposes.

For example, some capos are only suitable for fingerboards, fingerboards, electric guitars, classical guitars, steel string guitars, etc. Therefore, it is important to choose a capo that is designed and is suitable for your type of guitar. It is also important to choose a capo without sharp edges or protrusions, which can injure you or damage the neck of your guitar.

The pressure the capo exerts on your guitar strings is the cause of the capo effect. Therefore, it is recommended to choose a capo that allows you to easily adjust the pressure applied to the strings. The type of material used to make the capo is also important to consider as it determines the performance of the capo. So, make sure that the capo you buy is made from a flexible material that is strong, but not so hard that it can damage your instrument.

If you are looking for a well made generic capo, the G7th capo and the Kyser KG6B are both great options. The G7th capo is my recommendation for almost everyone because it allows you to adjust the capo quickly and in a way that won’t damage your guitar.

Most other types of capos can be adjustable tension screw capos or spring-style models with quick-release systems, but the G7th Performance Capo uses a patented clutch mechanism for quick click-on and squeeze-off action.

On the other hand, the Kyser KG6B is also a great take-out capo option because it can be easily adjusted individually and is less expensive. These two capo brakes are easy to use and affordable options that will last for years to come and serve you well throughout your guitar playing life.
