Award Ceremony Program – I have attended many award functions in my life and watched many TV shows. They are mostly honest. Often participants brag about themselves or what they have done that has changed the world when in reality it has not. The success of the Future Awards ceremony last Thursday was different.
I’m still somewhat new to this organization, however, so I had a general idea of what would happen at the event. Twenty students will receive a total of $30,000 in scholarships, and 20 local business professionals will be recognized for their dedication to mentorship and service. Simple, straightforward and unfortunately, it looked boring.

I took my seat and, like any good audience, I listened silently. What I heard was amazing.

These 20 kids weren’t straight A students or record-breaking athletes receiving scholarships for their achievements. These children overcome difficulties-
The first high school graduate in the family; English is a second language; Working full-time in addition to being a full-time student; living in poverty; Not mother, not father; little support at home; Little or no direction in life – Interestingly, while all of them faced and conquered such challenges, they too had potential. All he needed was a little help and guidance. This is where the Guru comes into the picture.
The idea of mentoring conjures up images of meeting some kids, giving them some advice, and patting them on the back. Not so with winning futures.
Before stepping into the classroom, Future Success mentors go through an extensive application, interview, background screening, and three hours of training. Then his mentoring journey really begins, meeting with 3-4 students at his school for an hour every week for 20-22 weeks. This is a significant personal investment in time, energy, emotions and the children working with them.

Mentor of the Year Award recipients do all this and much more, meeting with students on their own time, taking them to the workplace for jobs, introducing them to different careers, and ultimately making them realize that They have value and value and a “successful future”.
Dave Fernholz is one such mentor. He has been a Success Futures advisor for over 20 years, following in the footsteps of his boss, mentor and friend, Mike Fitzpatrick. More than 70 students have benefited from Dave’s wise guidance, and for this he has received the 20-Year Mentor Award and the Sam Kup Legacy Award.
“I’ve learned over the years that students are very similar now and then,” Dave said. “They want to be heard, they want to be understood and they want direct advice. I hope I have given to my students. If I have, I have been successful in helping them and the community.”
I will not mention the people and companies that support our program, the many people who attended the ceremony. They are smart people who understand and appreciate the value and importance of investing in today’s youth. The bad news is that there are too many to list here. I left the awards ceremony feeling great about the organization I joined in February, knowing that my work was relevant and meaningful. And, at least in a small way, we are changing the world.
