Whether it’s been since grade school or as recently as the last time you tried Photoshop, most of us have seen a version of the color wheel at some point. The history of this important guide for artists and designers goes back to the early 1700s. Understanding the basics of the color wheel will significantly help you in your choice of color combinations, especially if you are not well versed in the world of color theory.

All colors come from some combination of primary colors. The three primary colors are red, blue and yellow. These three colors are basically the mother of all other colors.

Tertiary colors are colors that come from mixing one of the primary colors with one of the closest secondary colors. Tertiary colors lie between all primary and secondary colors.

Like any other field of study, the world of art, design and color is full of technical language. A general understanding of color terminology will be of great help, both here and in the future of your business. We are going to introduce you to the basic terms most used in the chromatic world.

Now that we are familiar with color theory, we should take a quick look at color psychology. This is important because the colors and patterns you choose set the tone for how your customers and clients feel about your website, business cards and/or office space. Choosing a color combination isn’t about choosing a color you like, it’s about choosing a color that evokes the emotion you’re looking for in your audience.

Once you decide on the psychology you want, it’s easy to choose the right color. Using the color wheel, you can quickly select monochromatic, complementary, analog, split, triad, or tetrad color combinations. These different color schemes guide your choice between choosing contrasting colors and harmonious colors, depending on the desired effect you want to achieve.

Monochromatic color combinations are different variations of a hue. This combination consists of several shades, shades and shades of the selected shade. For example: dark blue, slightly lighter blue and light blue. This combination is ideal for simplifying busy designs and creating a harmonious and visually appealing look. This is a great color scheme strategy if you want your brand to be identified by a specific color. It’s also useful for showing progress in a design, such as a tiered price list, or for creating a more sophisticated-looking design by using brighter colors.

Complementary colors are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. These colors have high contrast with each other and can make your designs stand out with high contrast. However, if used incorrectly, they can be quite visually annoying.

In general, when using complementary colors, you don’t want to use them evenly throughout your design. You want to choose one of the shades as your main color and then use complementary colors to highlight and make certain important elements stand out.

These contrasting color schemes can also be found in nature and can give a design a dynamic yet natural feel. Take, for example, the orange coral that stands out against the blue of the ocean, or the lavender against the soft green of the leaves.

The above is an example of a complementary combination: blue and orange. Notice how they stack up against each other on the color wheel.

These color combinations sit side by side on the color wheel. The harmonious combination evokes serenity and peace. Some say this is because analog combinations often exist in nature. It is recommended that you choose a primary color as a base and then select two more to highlight. It usually works best with secondary and tertiary colors. Make sure your base color dominates and the other two colors stand out, don’t overdo it. Also, be careful about choosing colors that are closely related, as they can mix and ruin your design.

This is a variation of the complementary color scheme. However, instead of two colors facing each other, this combination consists of one color and the colors on either side of the complement. This strategy adds more variety than a complementary color scheme by including three colors, without being too flashy or too bold. Using this method, we get a combination that includes warm and cool tones that are easier to balance than complementary color schemes.

This simple color combo is a variant of the split complementary color scheme. The colors in this composition are equally spaced on the color wheel. Take an equilateral triangle and place it on the color wheel. The colors in each point come together to create a triadic combination.

These color combinations tend to be quite bright, even when toned down, tinted or shaded. Colors can look fun or juvenile. So you have to be careful with the balance of these colors. Choosing one as your main color and using the other two as accents is a solid start.

Like triadic combinations, tetradic color combinations involve colors that are evenly spaced. Except this color scheme uses four colors instead of three. You can find tetradic combinations by placing a square on the color wheel and selecting a color in each corner, or by selecting two sets of complementary and opposite colors.

This color combination is always loud and fun, and its vibrancy makes the design stand out. However, care must be taken to strike a balance with these combinations, as they can easily overwhelm.

Unless you have a natural affinity or background in art and design, choosing the best color combination can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. You won’t really know what color combination you’ve chosen in your design until you actually apply it. That’s why experimenting with different shades, hues, tints and shades can help you find the best color combination for your goals and desires. And help you convey the messages and feelings you want.
