Bolt Torque Chart – P. I am working on a 1955 Chevy Belair restoration. I’ve never done this before, so every step of it is new to me. I use the 5 and 8 ratings, but I’ve found that no one includes torque specs with their aftermarket kits.
When it comes to properly tightening the brake, steering and drive shaft, I want to make sure I don’t go over the torque value/rating for the bolts. When I contact kit suppliers the advice I get to simply “tighten” it or “hang a torque wrench” is a bit too vague for me when safety is a priority.

I have researched several torque charts and no two come close to showing the same value for the same ball. If they are close, I would feel comfortable reducing the torque value by 1-2% of the maximum specified value and telling it to break, but I could never do that.

ABOUT. There is no shortage of experts when it comes to measuring and determining the appropriate bolt torque, but there are many reasons for that as well.
Bolt torque measures the bolt’s tensile load. It is important to realize that not all bolt torque situations require the bolt to be torqued to maximum torque. In fact, larger bolts are used in some cases to increase shear strength as opposed to tensile strength.
I’ve included the torque chart I usually use, but keep in mind that every bolt on the car doesn’t need to be torqued to maximum torque. For example, things like gas tank straps just need to be tight as too much tension can damage the tank or the straps.

All of the brake kits I have installed include the manufacturer’s bolt torque specifications. I guess this is a warranty issue that the manufacturer just doesn’t want to deal with. Driveshaft u-bolts have torque specifications, and here are some common torque specifications for driveshaft components listed by Dana Spicer Corporation.
I’m a little unclear on which steering component you’re looking for torque specs on, but this info might be helpful. U-joint bolts are usually “hardened” because they are small diameter bolts held in place by a nut.
(Note: It is always necessary to countersink the steering shafts under the set screws so that the joint is not allowed to slide off the shaft even in a slightly loose setting.)
