It’s November and you may have seen people online talking about NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month! I love this event and have been participating for the past 2 years. In fact, my graphic novel “City of Secrets”, out with Penguin/Viking in 2020, was originally a NaNo prose project!
I’ve noticed that a lot of other cartoonists are talking about using NaNo as a way to script their graphic novel projects, and I think that’s a great idea. I love the sense of community around NaNo and the sense of urgency and competition created by everyone working towards the same goal.
I wanted to write this post because I remember when I first started the journey of adapting my prose novel into a graphic novel and how I really had no idea how to start.
There are just as many ways to write a graphic novel as there are to write a novel! However, I have noticed three popular formats that we can discuss here.
Script Writer Cover Letter Template
This method is used by people who are much more visual and want to see the story unfold almost like a movie. They write as they create thumbnails to get a feel for the layout and rhythms of the book. I tried this method for my second Nano project. The advantage of this is that you get a project design that is easy to share with others and can be very close to the final product, minus the gloss.
This works for a lot of cartoonists, but I personally had a harder time with it because I felt locked into my panels and it was harder to make adjustments and changes when the art was there. However, this is a very personal preference and there is no right or wrong way, just the way that works for you!
In this example, I sketched my thumbnails on one page of my notebook and used the opposite side for the dialogue.
Several graphic novel writers I know use this method. Bryan Lee O’Malley described this as his preferred method, and Jen Wang also has a sample of her script-style script at the end of “The Prince and the Dressmaker”
How To Write An Easy And Amazing Podcast Script
When I started writing screenplays, I was also interested in writing for film and television. Coming from that world, I was used to reading scripts and could visualize the finale and move quickly through the script.
This is my personal preferred method. However, I know that to someone who is not used to reading scripts, it can seem very unnatural. I like to fix as much as possible without having to draw, so I used this method for “City of Secrets”.
The comic book format is the most descriptive and parallel to the comic book without any art. Pages and panels can be wrapped in Comics format.
When I was working on Diana Princess of the Amazons, this was the method that Shannon and Dean used, and it was really helpful for me as an illustrator to not have to spend so much time thinking about how I was going to cover the pages.
Sources Of The Scripts Used For Multiple Sample Analyses (short…
I have also used this method for shorts in the past. I like how it can save you time in the scoring phase, but for my own work, I’ve noticed that sometimes I deviate from the pages/panels specified in the script, but it still gives me a general idea of the length of the book/project.
I kind of made it up, it’s the method I use now. I realized that the downside of the script format was that I had no idea how long my comic would be. A normal film has about 110 pages and is one minute per page. However, there is no exact way to translate this to graphic novels, as pages and minutes in a movie are very different things. The advantage of comics is the possibility to stay on the pictures or create a panel with reactions. My screenplay format for “City of Secrets” was 80 pages, but it turned into a 252 page book!
I’ve been doing comic book formatting for a while now, but I realized that I was really buried in the writing process when I was thinking about boards. The story didn’t flow for me. So I decided to make a kind of hybrid. I know how long a page “feels” so I decided to introduce page break scenarios into the format. The benefit of this is that the story moves more naturally in my mind, but I also get a general idea of how long my book will be or aim for a target page more easily.
Now you can find your own method of scripting your book. That’s totally cool! There is no “right” way to get there, you just have to start! These four methods should give you a baseline. I’ve personally tried all four, and while I have my favorites, it took me a while with all of them to find them. Do whatever feels right for you, but know that it’s okay if it changes or is different from what everyone else is doing! What does the scenario look like? Screenwriting and traditional prose writing share many characteristics and similarities, but are best thought of as entirely different storytelling disciplines. We’ll explore what an average screenplay looks like, how different genres prioritize different elements, and look at specific examples of screenplays worth reading and studying.

With a few exceptions, all scenarios follow the same standard formatting rules. Proper script formatting is extremely important when writing a screenplay for many reasons, one of the most important being the running time of the final film. One page of properly formatted script equals about one minute of screen time. It is incredibly important to know roughly how long the film will take to shoot.
All scenarios are built from the same basic design elements. To dive deeper into these specific elements and learn how to use each one, read our script design guide. If you’re interested in writing a screenplay yourself, screenwriting software can help you get started for free.
If all scenarios are built from the same elements, how can some scenarios look so drastically different from others? The genre of the film can affect the look of the script. Two main parts of the scenario that fulfill
