One of my followers sent me an application for a benefit, I’ll call her Samantha Jackson. He is an active duty SrA and this is his first time applying. He was elected during the 16OT04 class council.

This is the Letter of Recommendation “Natalie” sent with the application. He is a civilian nominee for the 2016 ranking board.

“The attachment has 3 LORs, but I sent four with my application. I tried to show variety in the LORs and choose each one with a specific purpose.

When I post, I order from strongest to weakest. I asked 3 people from work, 1 professor from college, 2 people from the non-profit I volunteered at, and 3 personal friends. Then I chose the best in each category. It really helps to have extras to choose from. Some people I thought would write me good letters, but they are not good writers. I usually don’t recommend using a personal LOR. I’m only sending mine because my friend is serving in the AF in the position I’m applying for. While the other two LORs from personal friends were not really useful; they’re fun to read, they’re fun to write, and they inspire real confidence!

When I ask LORs, I ask in person or over the phone. Then I sent an email to the basic requirements given by the recruiter:  inking, date, on official letterhead, 3-5 paragraphs and no more than one page. I ask early and set a deadline a few weeks before I need it.

Thanks to all my followers who send me information to post! This is from an active duty selected from the 2016 unrated board.

A reader has graciously offered an OTS applicant profile for the blog! It has been cleaned up, so use it as an example of the content, not the format. Thanks for posting this (you know who you are!) Her fictitious name is “Natalie Johnson”. A letter of military recommendation increases the chances of being accepted when applying for a position, promotion, special program, military school/academy, or requesting an award/medal that a person considers worthy but has not been awarded at the time of discharge. Whether it’s the Air Force, Army, Marines, or Navy, there’s a good chance that a letter of recommendation will be required at some point in your military career. Usually, a collection of letters of recommendation is required for the application/request, all in the application package that is less than 6 months old. When the admissions committee compares two candidates with the same set, an excellent collection of letters of recommendation from reliable and trustworthy sources can make the difference between acceptance and rejection.

When choosing a writer for a military recommendation letter, remember that extra weight is given to recommendations that are high-ranking officers. Captain, Major, Commander/Colonel, General/Admiral are excellent choices; However, if he does not know the candidate personally, he is not a reliable judge and is a poor choice.

If it is not possible to obtain a letter from the chain of command, the next possible option is someone who knows the candidate personally, preferably someone who can testify to his growth or has seen him in leadership. Letters of recommendation can come from teachers/professors, employers, coaches, counselors, religious leaders, or anyone who can speak to the applicant’s character.

A collection of letters of recommendation must come from a variety of sources that provide evidence that the candidate’s character is appropriate for the position/promotion/program/award applied for. If the letter contains true and accurate evidence of the applicant’s eligibility, this collection will make a suitable argument for him. In some cases, a certain number of letters of recommendation are required. Applicants should review the application guidelines before submitting to avoid providing too many, or too few, letters of recommendation.

Military Cover Letter Sample [pdf + Word]

Military letters of recommendation must be well-crafted and properly formatted, as they will go into the military’s official file. This is similar to a business or college style letter, but the format is more detailed for military or civilian personnel employed by the military. The main body of the letter will consist of an introduction, 1-3 body paragraphs and a conclusion. This paragraph should be numbered (unless the author is a military personnel). All writers should maintain a professional tone and do their best to make a good case for the applicant’s qualifications and suitability.

If the letter is written by military personnel, it will be in a clear format. Use your organization’s letterhead if possible and include the following information at the top of the page:

Non-military writers may omit such formatting details as office letterhead, “MEMORANDUM FOR,” “FROM,” “SUBJECT,” and numbered paragraphs, but must still include the date.

The first paragraph should contain the name of the applicant and the purpose of the letter; 1 sentence is enough, but this paragraph can be 2-3 sentences if the writer wants to include how long they have known the candidate, their credentials, and what they are qualified to recommend.

To the US Air Force Academy Admissions Board, it is with great privilege that I write to you regarding Marco Shykairy’s application to the US Air Force Academy. Marco has been a star athlete on the soccer team at Felix Varela High School for 3 years. His leadership, tenacity and physical ability have helped us become one of the most successful teams in the league and I am sure he will excel in the competitive environment of the Academy.

This example was written by a high school student’s football coach who recommended the student to the Air Force Academy. The coach didn’t know specifically who would read the letter, so it was addressed to the admissions office. The author shows a clear understanding of what the academy is looking for in a cadet and believes that this individual has the necessary qualities.

The content of the letter should be at least 1 paragraph, but it can contain 2 or even 3 paragraphs. The idea is to explain the reason behind the recommendation by describing the character of the recommended person, listing personal characteristics, and recording experiences that the author has direct knowledge of that are also relevant to the position. Any personality traits considered important for the position/purpose of the application should be mentioned such as leadership, reliability, integrity, camaraderie and tenacity. Real examples of these positive qualities should be noted to strengthen the letter.

2. Corporal McEvoy’s promotion to Sergeant is highly recommended as he has proven time and time again to be an intelligent, disciplined and self-confident leader. His duties and responsibilities were carried out diligently. McEvoy’s team is also highly trained and organized, which is directly related to his ability to command a unit. He received success from his soldiers because he asked for respect by showing courage and influencing his colleagues to improve their training and performance. Corporal McEvoy wanted his soldiers to succeed, he wanted the Army to succeed, and his loyalty never wavered.

Promotion from corporal to sergeant is a big step, and the author of this first example makes a strong case for promoting certain NCOs. Leadership, integrity, loyalty, discipline are all qualities that should be possessed by a sergeant and the higher ranks recommend this individual as evidence of these qualities directly.
