Given the filing date associated with each process, the document is timed to give a brief idea of what happened in the case. A long docket indicates that the case is of similar size. Docket numbers do not have a standard format, i.e. may or may not include the year number, and may contain combinations of numbers, letters, and symbols such as parentheses, slashes, and dashes, so searching by docket number can be difficult. .
Below is a list of good websites and databases for docket searches. Bloomberg Lawis is often the best docket resource for UC Hastings students. In the past few years, the Nation in Boston has digitized the US District Court case dockets and title index, opening up access to these high-use records. Includes criminal, civil, and bankruptcy indexes and documents that can be used to find parties and case numbers in the United States District Courts of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The docket contains documents and records of proceedings arising from the litigation and includes information about the parties, counsel and the presiding judge. They are organized by case type (criminal, civil, etc.) and then by document serial number. In the example on the left, #56-89 refers to the 89th criminal case heard in 1956 by the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Name indexes generally include case numbers and parties involved in the case. Sometimes these records also include the date the petition was filed and the name of the presiding judge. As a general rule, index series are not always comprehensive and must be used in conjunction with the appropriate cover to confirm the details of a particular case.

An electronic document called schedule management is a unique feature for updating upcoming events without having to search for each event individually. The Appellate Court docket is unique in that it contains a list of documents submitted to the appellate court and case information from the trial court. No proceedings shall be held in the Court of Appeals, and no new evidence shall be allowed to be adduced. They examine how the law is interpreted and applied in lower courts.
