Before we get to the really fun stuff, like how to calculate square feet or how many square feet are in an acre, it’s important to first review the definition of a square. In other words, what makes a shape a square?
To answer the question “Is a square a rectangle?”, compare the definition of a square (above) with the definition of a rectangle. A rectangle is a square with all four interior angles of 90 degrees.

That means the answer to the question “is a square a rectangle” is technically yes. Squares are rectangles with 90 degree interior angles.
Before you dive into those long-awaited math formulas, take a minute to grab this printable square template. It can be useful when working through or trying to illustrate mathematical concepts, such as how to find the area of squares.

Are you a bit nervous about math? Do you have flashbacks from high school geometry class? Don’t panic! I’m going to start with something very simple to boost your math confidence. How to find the perimeter of squares.

To find the perimeter of a square, all you need to do is add the lengths of all four sides. So it will look like this:
However, it’s actually even easier than that. Remember that a square has 4 equal sides, so all you have to do is take the length of one side and multiply it by four, so
Finding the area of squares is not nearly as difficult as finding the area of some other shapes (eg, octagons). So this is a great place to start if you’re just brushing up on those geometry skills or if you’re brushing them up after a long hiatus.
To begin with how to find the area of squares, you only need to know the length of one side of the square. (Remember that all four sides of a square are equal, so if you know the length of one side, you know the length of all the sides. 🙂 ) Now take that length and select it.

In mathematics, to “square” something is to multiply it by itself. So let’s say one side of your square is 5 feet long. To “protect” it, you need to calculate 5 * 5. That means the area of your square is 25 ft².
Yes (well, mostly)! In addition to finding the area of squares, you now basically know how to calculate square feet. Of course, “square” doesn’t necessarily mean a square shape. Square footage is simply a measurement of an area, often the overall size of a room or house.
If you are learning how to measure the square meters of an area that is actually square, it is exactly the same as finding the area of squares.
However, as mentioned above, the standard square meter measurement refers to real estate (for example, the size of your master bedroom). Generally, rooms are not perfectly square or even exact numbers. For example, a room might be 11.5 feet by 13 feet. It might make learning to square measure a little more difficult, but I know you can do it. 🙂

Guess what? Now you know the basics of squares. You know what a square is, how to find the perimeter of a square, and how to find the area of a square. Do you even know how to measure square meters? And speaking of square meters, I’m going to walk you through how to convert square meters to some other common measurements, but first I’d like to share with you some additional 2D shapes.
Like the printable square shape, these other printable shapes can be useful for math lessons, craft projects, and art activities, so be sure to download this free printable 2D shape chart in black and white or the printable 2D shape chart ahead of you. go
Earlier in the section on finding the area of squares, we discussed how to calculate square feet. Quick refresher, all you do is multiply the length of the area by the width of the area. However, what if you need to convert square feet to square meters, meters or acres? So glad you asked… 🙂
The first step in any conversion is to know the ratio. That is, how many square meters are there in a hectare? Answer: 43560.

Hint. You can easily get this information from Google. Just go to a search engine and type in “how many square meters in an acre”.
Now, to convert acres to square meters, simply multiply the number of acres by 43,560, (again, this is the number of square meters in each acre.) For example, if you want to know the number of square meters in 2 acres, you need to. Multiply 43,560 by 2, which is 87,120 square feet.
And if you want to go another way? In other words, what if you want to calculate square meters per acre? It’s not a problem at all. To calculate square feet per acre, simply take the number of square feet and divide by 43,560. So if you had 130,680 square feet and wanted to convert it to acres, it would be 130,680 / 43,560 which equals 3 acres.
Well, again, the first step is to know your ratio. How many square meters are in a square meter? The answer is 10764.

So, to convert square meters to square meters, you would divide the number of square meters by 10,764. For example, 53.82 square feet per square meter is 53.82 / 10.764 = 5 square meters.
To go the other way and convert square meters to square meters, simply multiply the number of square meters by 10,764.
This is going to be the easiest one yet because there is no decimal point and the ratio is quite small. So what’s your rate? How many square meters per square meter? Answer: 9 square meters is equal to 1 square meter.
So to convert square feet to square meters you would divide 9 by 9.

Okay, last math concept of the day, I swear. Let’s talk about perfect squares and square roots, neither of which have anything to do with the printable square form of yesteryear. 🙂
A perfect square is a number obtained by multiplying two even integers. For example, 4 is a perfect square because it can be obtained by multiplying 2 * 2 (two even integers). Other examples of perfect squares are:
Finding the square root means finding what two equal integers will give when multiplied together. For example, if you are asked to find the square root of 16, what two pairs of integers when multiplied together give 16? The answer is 4. The square root of 16 is therefore 4.
The square root symbol looks like √. So, for example, if you were asked to find the square root of 9, it would be written using the square root symbol like √9.

When dealing with perfect squares, especially smaller perfect squares, finding the square root is fairly straightforward. For example, what is the square root of 9? It’s 3 because 3 * 3 equals 9.
However, unfortunately we are not always dealing with small square roots or square roots of perfect squares. When this happens, it is up to the teacher how you express your answer. Some classes may allow you to use prime factorization (if applicable) or even a calculator. Other:
