I am happy to congratulate you on the celebration of the 65th anniversary of our Church! We have come so far in faith and God has blessed our community so much. Our founders planted those seeds of faith, even as God blesses us today. This congregation is going through a glorious time and God has shown me that He has bigger plans for us today. As our theme for the year states, we are “born in His image” and in doing so we praise and glorify God alone. I express His divine influence in everything we do and the working power of the Holy Spirit in every step we take. As the leader of this great congregation, I know very well the greatest leader in history, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

As a leader, Jesus remained steadfast in his mission. Like Jesus, our enemy tries tricks to distract us from the mission God has given us. But when we are “like and like unto Him,” we must do as Jesus did and avoid any activity or endeavor that is not related to our mission of spreading the good news and serving our people. Being the pastor of a congregation as powerful as ours has given me literally a thousand opportunities to take advantage of. But Jesus, who had all the power, remained in his mission, which he connected directly with his Father’s business and nothing else. As we move forward to the year 2001, we must follow the example of Jesus and hold fast to our God-given mission.

As a leader, Jesus created a team. Like Jesus, we do our work through our human relationships and cooperation. No time was wasted organizing the team by simply saying, “Follow me.” It has created an opportunity for various people with different skills and backgrounds. Even Jesus knew that he alone could not change the world. The same is true of church leadership today. If we want to achieve anything important, we need smart ideas, great intentions, and the wonderful things that come from working together. Jesus said that if we are two or three together, he will be there; the perfect team for total success. Part of our Church’s Remembrance Day, p. James Ella Irvin and Usher Council No. 1 have followed this pattern and this wonderful celebration is a great example of Christian cooperation.

As a leader, Jesus considered his people the greatest thing he did. He said of his disciples, “They glorify me.” Of all the miracles that Jesus performed, he ultimately believed that the growth of his people was the most important. Just like Jesus, we should celebrate the changes that have been made in our people’s lives – it’s great what we’ve achieved. As a minister, I am only successful when souls are saved. Yes, we should be proud of the many important contributions we have made to this community in recent years. But as Jesus did, may we leave a lasting legacy as souls we lead to God, families we strengthen, and lives we touch for good.

At this time, I proudly accept the challenge of our topic and encourage each of you to do the same. Take this challenge and study it, accept it and live it every day as we seek God’s will for our community, our city, our country and the world.
