Deal Memo Sample – A crew deal memo is basically a contract between the producer (and/or production company) and the hired crew member.
Production and production of a film is a temporary project. Therefore, most of the employees are hired on temporary basis. The crew deal memo outlines the length of employment, compensation and other key factors to be agreed upon between the producer/production company and the individual crew member.

If the production is a unionized shoot, the crew must follow the union rules of the crew members’ union, especially regarding compensation, overtime, meals and vacations.

Enter your data and contact details in the first section. This is where you enter the crew member’s name, their title/position, and social security number. There is a place for the rate here, if it is just a flat rate or the same weekly rate, enter it here. If there are different rules for compensation, type “see below” and enter this information in the compensation section.

If this is a union shoot (eg for a first assistant director), check with the DGA (Directors Guild of America) for specific rules and guidelines on directors’ pay rates. Usa Motion Picture Crew Deal Memo (non Union)
It is a general provision stating that the duties to be performed must correspond to the title/position of the crew member. If specific information that is not customary for this crew member’s position is or should be entered here, enter it here.
This clause established a standard 6-day work week. If this is a non-union shoot and you would like the work week to be 5 days, please specify here. If the shoot is unionized and the crew member is a member of a union, check the union’s policies regarding work days, overtime, and vacation time.
It is common to plan at least 10 hours of processing time between shoot dates. So if a production day ends at 12:00 PM, shooting should start at 10:00 AM the next day.
For this reason, the assistant director or production manager usually prepares the call sheets at the “end” of the day. We have a great post on call sheets (you can also get a free call sheet template here!).

The crew must eat! One of the most important aspects (and one of the most important perks) of working on a film production: free food! A free meal per day (except breakfast!) is common (and sometimes mandatory for union film shoots). With non-union shoots, you want employees to be happy. You have no choice in union-shooting! Contact the union for meal compensation rules and guidelines.
If a crew member needs to purchase anything (including food) for production, this must be agreed with the manufacturer and/or line producer. You don’t want the boom operator to show up, pull out the $5,000 mic he got on Amazon and give the receipt to the manufacturer without permission! (This happened to me, which is why I’m mentioning it – it wasn’t $5,000, but still…)
If the producer/production company needs to fire the crew member for any reason, let them know here so they can do so.
This is especially important for both non-union and union drives. Crew member wants credit for picture! This clause specifically states that the crew member will receive credits at the end (and sometimes the beginning) of the film. Director Of Photography Deal Memo
This clause explains that production insurance does not cover damage to the employee’s property resulting from the employee’s negligence.
This is standard in most contracts. It states that the employee undertakes not to disclose any creative information (story, images, audio, etc.) about the production without written consent.
This is standard in most contracts, and if there is a disagreement between the production company and the employee, both parties agree to arbitration. If this is a union production, contact the union. Many unions have their own arbitration procedures. Nobody wants to go to court!
