“The first thought that crossed my mind was, ‘Oh, this is happening!’ “I was completely taken by the whole experience, I really didn’t think he was going to propose this year,” Leah, 29, told NBC News.

Wright, a 30-year-old dancer-choreographer, said he was ready to propose as their eight-year anniversary approached. Two weeks before the date, he called a cameraman and prepared an elaborate plan to film their love story on the dance floor with a special co-written script.
“I knew that whatever I had to do, it had to be big,” Wright told NBC News. “I really wanted it to be big, and I wanted it to be really special to him. I wanted to go ahead and put it all together in one room—everything in one room that I love.”

With cameras and lights rolling, about 130 people — mostly Wright’s dance students — watched the couple dance. The crowd knew it was the couple’s anniversary, but didn’t know Wright planned to propose, he said.
Wright said he was constantly checking his back pocket to make sure the ring was in place, noting that at one point the ring fell out of the box, causing Leah to become distracted and have to put it back.
“I was so scared because I took that ring box out and thought it was nothing,” Wright said.
Wright chose the legendary “You and I” because the song speaks to his and Leah’s relationship and the struggles they face.

“I always try to make it clear to Ashley, ‘Hey, you’re a girl, there’s no one here,'” he said. You are my home.”
Leah and Wright first met in 2011. In 2009, Wright was teaching hip hop at a dance studio in Miami. Liai wanted to take her first hip hop class as she looked to expand her dance experience and eventually appear as a dancer for Miami Heat. She took one of Wright’s hip hop classes and was hooked.
“It wasn’t love at first sight, but over the months I’ve known him, I know I want to be more than just friends,” she says.
His first day was at a dance studio. “Do you want to go to the cinema or hang out at the studio?” he asked. So we choreographed and brought snacks and drinks,” Lia said.

Over the years, Liai has trained in Polynesian, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Maori and Samoan dance. She began her training at the age of 5 and began performing regularly in her family’s entertainment company, Polynesian Pride Productions, Inc.
