Art Project Proposal – Offer Viewing Area Southeast Community Institute 1800 Oakdale Avenue San Francisco, CA 94124 Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The San Francisco Art Commission is selecting art for the main lobby of the new southeast community center at 1550 Evans Street. The new community center is designed to provide workforce, childcare, and educational opportunities for the Bayview community. The purpose of the artwork is to celebrate the Bayview community – its people, values, history and culture. In addition, the decoration of the main lobby can be dedicated to the six founders of the Southeast Community Facility. The selection committee selected four artists as finalists to create a specific proposal for the main lobby: Suhas Bhujbal, Emory Douglas, Kenyatta Hinkle and Sanaz Mazinani.
Art Project Proposal
Bayviews are now more diverse than in the past; Hispanics, Asian Americans, African Americans among other ethnic groups. Having lived in Bayview for the last 10 years, I have seen the culture, the changes over the years, helped me understand and express my vision of this project in this piece of art/painting.
Multimedia Project Proposal
The new community center offers yoga, dance, kindergarten, music, activities, events, education, sports, meetings, etc. I have included these items in pictorial forms/scenes to show the lifestyle of the place in bright, vibrant colors. Grid, a representational yet visual touch to paintings, and abstraction to have a more curious/ambiguous approach to a work of art than a formal approach. My attempt is to create a playful and inviting environment so that viewers can enjoy the atmosphere of a community center or become a “destination” for visitors.
The Big Six have fought for fifteen years to get Bayview the attention it deserves. In honor of the Big Six, I also included their image in the cover, which fits well with the overall composition.
Bayview hosts many community events celebrating many community events. Some of them are: Hunters Point Open Studios, SF Sunday Streets – run, walk, bike or dance on 3rd Street in summer, movie nights with food at MLK Pool Grounds, many Opera House events, picnic tables in the park Hill Top, as well as the annual Soul Food Festival And Block Party, etc. I tried to capture the essence of these social gatherings in a more abstract way.
I included stunning views of the bay, cranes near the shipyard, the opera house, Victorian houses in the neighborhood and a bright yellow sundial in Hilltop Park.
Unit 7 Project Proposal Fine Art
The artwork is transferred onto bricks, metal panels, or colored wood panels. This is a draft. Architectural images and portraits of the “Big Six” may be applied to the finished work.
The visual image of Emory Douglas is created from ceramic clay in the form of a relief of the shape of a wall on one of the footstools. These pottery will be handmade originals. The main lobby of the Southeast Community Center occupies three walls.
The overall rich natural color of the clay is terracotta red, the images of local flowers and plants create an overall impression on visitors. Earth tones remind us of knowledge of the earth and deep respect for the environment. The dark reflective lines and white tones of the original image become sculptural relief and protrude from the wall in a way that our communities can admire. Black Central Man is a direct celebration of the struggle and triumph of African Americans to continue the path of community self-determination.
Messenger is an exchange and dissemination of information as an organizational tool. The kid confidently announces the news of the day in the Black Panther newspaper and becomes a herald of social change and community awareness. The clear message of “all power to the people” is now central to the international declaration of power for the oppressed.
Writing A Project Proposal
We see the Big Six, quoting public defenders, Bayview Hunter points to headlines. On the right wall are life-size portraits of the Big Six depicted in the classic Emory style and later created by sculptor Caleb Duarte. The sculpted tiled wall with native Bay Area flora reflects both the ecological and cultural diversity of Bayview Hunters Point and the care and concern for the environment. In the Sunbeams landscape, we see texts about the region’s Olone people, as well as food plants and the importance of access to healthy food in what was once called “a prime example of a food desert.” “This often harms our communities of color at work.
The background of the central image will be Emory Douglas’ iconic sunbeam as a symbol of strong resistance in the form of positive light. The native vegetation of the bay that adorns the sun will be represented by sculptural relief, especially in the Bayview wetlands. The diversity of flora reflects the cultural diversity of the Bayview community.
The Messenger is an iconic figure of the Black Panther Party representing the dissemination of knowledge and information as the main tool for organizing the community for social and political change. The youthful appearance of a child celebrates the tenacity and resistance of society, while expressing a sense of strength and self-determination.
Life-size portraits of the Big Six will be created by Emory Douglas in sculpted relief in a stark iconic style. The names of Harold Madison, Shirley Jones, Eloise Westbrook, Dr. Espanola Jackson, Ethel Garlington, and Alex Pitcher are listed below the photographs.

In this picture, the headline of the newspaper will be “The Big Six”. In honor of the work of the founders of the Southeast Community Center. The idea is to present the Big Six as a group of public defenders working for the good of the people, as seen in the newspaper headline “All Power to the People”.
A mural on the left wall depicts the culturally rich and diverse history of Bayview Hunters Point. The painting depicts Chinese fishermen catching shrimp, as well as shipyard workers. These figures are in sculpted relief with subtle tone and texture to complement the central figure. There will be multiple pointers on the image to show multiple stories in the same image.
Native Californian plants are carved into most of the tiles, reflecting the ecological diversity of the Bayview wetlands. From the California poppy to the Arctostaphylos Sentinel plant. The sculptural plants celebrate the environmental care that local organizations have taken to create a healthy Bayview community. Such as the Basin Neighborhood Association, Literacy for Environmental Justice, the Bayview Merchants Association, Bayview Footprints Community Building Groups Joint Association and Greenation for Health and Environmental Justice.
Fruit trees are carved into two corners of the wall. It’s a reminder of a time when Bayview was a prime example of a “food desert” known to affect predominantly black and brown communities in the United States. Here we celebrate the efforts of organizations to create healthy gardens and markets for the Bayview community. Organizations such as the Quesada Gardens Initiative, which has created a cluster of 35 community gardens and orchards in the center of the neighborhood.

In a patch of bright sunlight, Bayview hunters paint patterns of the Ohlone people, the original inhabitants of the Point. Under the guidance of an Olone artist and activist, authentic wicker motifs are reproduced in ceramic sculptural reliefs.
The print press has played a large role in shaping the identity of the community at Bayview Hunters Point. It is also a sign of direct communication. Here the newspaper headlines read: “All power to the people.” Later, the Black Panther Party became a rallying cry for the oppressed and marginalized peoples of the world. This phrase has become fashionable and timeless. Emory Douglas, an original member of the Black Panther Party, has been praised for his contributions to leading social and political movements in the Bay Area.
This project was funded by Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle will be the result of a collaboration between a socially active visual artist and several generations of Bayview Hunters Point residents to display selected images from personal family photos and archives at the new Southeast Community Center. Hinkle’s work revolves around working with photographic archives to elevate the unknown and the nameless in relation to race, culture, colonialism, geography and history. If this project is complex, it is the relationship between representation, erasure, and anti-proliferation. This work requires collective visual stories to represent the community the way it wants to be represented.
